B A S I L   M A R S H A LL - I N M A N

Place of Birth:  New Zealand

Country of Residence:  Canada - Canadian Citizen since 1989

Education:

1959 - 1964 - Journeyman/Finishing Carpenter Apprenticeship Diploma

New Zealand Master Builders Association Inc.

Specializing in Finishing Carpentry.

Experience:

I have a lifetime of experience building custom designed homes in

New Zealand, Alberta and British Columbia, where I have used my own personal

building companies, Innovative Homes in Alberta and Marshall-Inman Builders

in Sooke, British Columbia.

Now retired from building homes I have turned my love of carpentry into making

tables of different types, first for my own personal use and then for my

children’s homes.    The response was remarkable and so now I have great

pleasure being able to use my well equipped wood working workshop,

(with a great view of Gordon’s Beach!) in Otter Point,

exclusively for building furniture.

Creativeness:

I take great pleasure in crafting these tables from recycled Canadian West Coast

Maple.  The beautiful colour, unique markings, along with the form and shape of the

raw timber are left as natural as possible. This allows the finished work to retain

the original source of the material.

It is intriguing to think that the material was an actual living entity and that

something beautiful can be created to continue the life of the tree, giving a deeper

level of meaning to the work.

The many hours spent to design and find solutions to bring the finished project

into reality is fortunately therapeutic and to have each piece tell a story that is

completely different from the last one created, is worth the time spent making them.

Future:

I look forward to continuing my endeavour of using this material, and exploring new

possibilities of what may evolve for the next table. I imagine the salvaged wood from the

tables could be transformed into possibly Wooden Toys, Chopping Boards, Spoons etc.

I invite you to visit our Marshall-Inman Gallery to view future projects.
